People Worldwide Are Split on Whether AI Is Good for Society

People around the world are far from united on whether artificial intelligence is actually good for society, according to a recent global survey capturing AI global views across 20 countries.

The Pew Research Center study found that a median of about 53% of respondents view AI development as a good thing for society, while 33% see it as a negative force. Opinions split even further on job automation specifically, with 48% calling it beneficial and 42% viewing it negatively, a much narrower gap that suggests real ambivalence rather than clear consensus.

Where AI Global Views Are Most Positive

Asian countries stand out clearly in the data. Roughly two-thirds or more of respondents in Singapore, South Korea, India, Taiwan, and Japan describe AI as a positive development for society. That optimism tracks closely with these countries’ actual investments in the technology, with several having emerged as genuine world leaders in AI development and deployment.

Most other regions surveyed fall short of majority approval. France stands out as particularly skeptical, with only 37% viewing AI favorably compared to 47% who see it negatively. The US and UK sit closer to an even split, while Sweden and Spain buck the broader European trend, both landing at 60% positive, matching the optimism seen across much of Asia.

Why Job Automation Views Follow a Similar Pattern

Asian publics again show notably more favorable AI global views specifically around job automation, a pattern closely tied to their manufacturing and robotics infrastructure. South Korea and Singapore currently have the highest and second-highest robot density anywhere in the world. Singapore has explicitly built AI into its broader strategy of becoming what it calls the world’s first “smart nation,” while Japan has spent decades as a leader in robotics, integrating automation into everything from household chores to elder care.

That real-world familiarity with automation may help explain the more positive sentiment. Countries where robots and AI already play a visible, everyday role appear more likely to see the technology as beneficial rather than threatening.

The Gender Gap in AI Global Views

One of the study’s clearest patterns involves gender. Men were significantly more likely than women to view AI positively in 15 of the 20 places surveyed. In Japan, nearly three-quarters of men held favorable views compared to 56% of women, and in the US, 53% of men saw AI positively against just 40% of women.

Education levels also shaped opinion consistently. In the Netherlands, 61% of college-educated respondents viewed AI favorably, compared to just 43% among those with less formal education, one of the largest education-based gaps recorded in the survey.

Age Plays a Role Too

Among the 11 countries where age proved to be a statistically significant factor, younger respondents consistently held more favorable views of AI than older generations. This generational divide mirrors similar patterns seen in past research on technology adoption, where younger populations tend to integrate new tools into daily life more readily.

Similar demographic patterns emerged around job automation specifically. In Italy, roughly two-thirds of college-educated respondents viewed automation positively, compared to just 38% among those with less education, one of the sharpest divides recorded anywhere in the survey. Notably, researchers found that people with more science education specifically, not just general higher education, tended to hold more favorable views of automation than peers with less scientific background.

What These Findings Suggest Going Forward

Taken together, the data paints a picture of AI global views shaped less by blanket optimism or pessimism and more by direct exposure, education, and demographic factors. As AI continues expanding into everyday tools, from social media algorithms to household appliances and transportation systems, understanding these divides could matter significantly for how governments and companies approach public communication around the technology’s rollout.

The gap between countries actively building AI infrastructure and those observing from a distance may continue shaping public opinion for years to come, particularly as automation’s real-world effects on employment become clearer across different economies and industries worldwide.
