AI Research Startup Listen Labs Scrubbed a $1.5B Funding Round for Salesforce Talks

The Listen Labs Salesforce deal has taken an unusual turn, with the market research startup walking away from a signed $1.5 billion funding round in favor of pursuing a potential acquisition instead, according to several people familiar with the matter.

Listen Labs, which uses voice AI to conduct customer interviews, had recently signed a term sheet for a $125 million Series C round at a $1.5 billion valuation, with Menlo Ventures set to lead the investment. That round never actually closed. Listen Labs instead walked away from the already-signed term sheet, a genuinely rare move in the venture capital world that’s generally frowned upon among investors.

Why the Listen Labs Salesforce Deal Derailed Funding

The financing round likely fell apart specifically because of acquisition talks now underway with Salesforce. According to Business Insider, the CRM giant has recently held discussions to acquire Listen Labs for approximately $2 billion. Those discussions remain unfinalized, however, and may not ultimately result in a completed deal.

Listen Labs currently ranks among the leading startups in the rapidly growing field of AI-powered customer research automation. The three-year-old company generates roughly $30 million in annualized revenue, about three times more than competitor Simile, according to two people familiar with both companies’ financials. Notably, Simile announced its own $200 million Series B round in late July at a $2 billion valuation led by Greenoaks, a benchmark one source suggested likely influenced Listen Labs’ own valuation expectations going forward.

What Happens If the Deal Falls Through

Should talks with Salesforce ultimately collapse, several venture capitalists told TechCrunch they expect Listen Labs to return to the fundraising market and target a valuation of $2 billion or higher, essentially matching or exceeding what Salesforce is reportedly considering paying.

While acquiring Listen Labs could meaningfully strengthen Salesforce’s own AI capabilities, particularly around predicting customer needs, the CRM giant may ultimately decide that paying a 67 times revenue multiple represents too steep a valuation, according to one person with direct experience negotiating exits to Salesforce. Listen Labs, Salesforce, Menlo Ventures, and Simile did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the reported discussions.

How Listen Labs Got Here

Listen Labs was co-founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann, a former German national champion in competitive computer programming, and Alfred Wahlforss, who previously founded staffing startup Bemlo. The two met while pursuing master’s degrees together at Harvard.

The company’s AI system develops survey questions and conducts customer interviews over audio or video, then packages those conversations into reports and presentations similar to what traditional human market researchers have historically produced. Fortune 500 companies commonly rely on this type of research to gauge customer needs and satisfaction with their products, though traditional market research remains notoriously expensive and can take weeks to complete.

Listen Labs’ technology aims to significantly reduce both the time and cost associated with these research projects, allowing companies to quickly understand how customers are reacting to product changes and iterate more efficiently as a result. The startup’s current customer base includes major names like Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen.

A Crowded, Fast-Growing Market

The Listen Labs Salesforce deal unfolds within an increasingly competitive space, as Listen Labs and Simile aren’t the only startups working to disrupt traditional customer research using AI. Other notable competitors include Outset, Keplar, and Aaru.

Interestingly, these companies take meaningfully different technical approaches. While platforms like Listen Labs automate interviews with real human participants, others, including Aaru and Simile, take a more synthetic approach entirely, using AI to simulate human behavior and predict likely responses without conducting any actual interviews at all.

Listen Labs was previously valued at $500 million when it announced a $69 million Series B round in late January, led by Ribbit Capital with participation from returning backers Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC, a valuation that has since roughly tripled amid the company’s rapid revenue growth and now-stalled acquisition discussions with Salesforce.
